How payments work in Toast
Toast's documentation describes Toast Payments as its built-in card processing. As we read it, the software, the card readers and the processing come from one company. A payment processor is the company that moves card money from your customer to your bank, and at a Toast restaurant that company is Toast.
That keeps things simple day to day. It also means the fees on your statement are set by your Toast agreement, and the way to understand them is to read that statement.
What you can do instead
- Read your monthly statement and add up every fee. Divide the total by your card sales to get your effective rate.
- Check your agreement for how rates can change, how online orders are priced, and your contract end date.
- Ask us to read it with you. A person will tell you what the numbers mean, even if the answer is to stay where you are.
- Treat a change of point-of-sale system as a separate decision. There is no pressure to switch software.
Questions merchants ask
Why did my Toast processing fee go up?
We cannot see your contract from here. Your statement shows each fee line, and your agreement says how rates can change. A free review reads both with you.
Why is there a separate fee on online orders?
Look for a separate line for online orders on your statement, and check your agreement for how online orders are priced.
Can I add a surcharge for card payments?
Rules vary by card network and by state, and your agreement may have its own terms. Check before you add one. Our surcharge guide covers the basics.
What happens to gift cards if I ever change systems?
Gift card balances are tracked by the system that sold them. Before any change, ask how balances would carry over.
Why were my deposits held?
Hold rules are in your payment agreement. Read that section and ask your provider in writing why a hold was placed.
See what you pay, for free
A person reads your statement with you and tells you what each fee means and whether a different processor is even possible with Toast. There is no pressure to switch.
