Cabling Project Readiness Check

Network cabling is the wiring that connects your computers, phones, cameras, and wireless access points back to one place in your building. Answer eight questions about your own site and this page tells you what a bidder still needs from you, then writes the scope brief you can send them.

Everything below is worked out from your answers. There are no averages and no industry figures, because your building is the only data that matters here.

  1. 1. Do you know how many cable drops the job needs?

A drop is one run of cable from your network closet to one wall jack, camera, access point, or piece of equipment.

  2. 2. Do you have a floor plan or drawing of the space?
  3. 3. Who controls the building?
  4. 4. Is there somewhere for the equipment to land?

Every cable run has to end at one place: a rack, a wall-mounted cabinet, or a network closet with power and cooling.

  5. 5. How will cable get from the closet to each drop?

Pathway means the route the cable travels: an accessible ceiling, a cable tray, conduit, or an existing raceway.

  6. 6. When can the work happen?
  7. 7. Will you require certification test results for every drop?

Certification testing means the installer puts a tester on each finished cable and hands you a report proving it meets the standard it was sold as.

  8. 8. When do you need it finished?

Answer the first question to see your result build up.
