Restaurant POS migration guide

Switching from Toast to SkyTab: what to check before you move

A point-of-sale system (POS) is the software and hardware that takes orders and payments, and a kitchen display screen (KDS) is the screen that shows orders to the kitchen. Yes, a restaurant can move from Toast to SkyTab, but the safe decision is not based on the register screen alone. Before canceling Toast, verify the workflows you use today, export the records you need to retain, confirm gift-card and loyalty obligations, and map the menu, modifiers, employees, kitchen routing, integrations, and network requirements into the new system.

What needs to be compared before you leave Toast

A POS switch is a business-process migration. The safe sequence is source capture, field mapping, owner approval, target configuration, testing, cutover, and acceptance. Do not cancel the source system until the records and workflows you need have been accounted for.

  • Table service, tickets, seats, splits, coursing, tabs, and handheld workflows
  • Kitchen printer and KDS routing
  • Online ordering, delivery, reservations, loyalty, payroll, and accounting integrations
  • Employee jobs, permissions, timeclock, tips, and manager approvals
  • Gift-card balances, customer records, and historical reports you need to retain

Export this before canceling Toast

  • Current menu and modifier data
  • Employee / job-role roster
  • Customer and marketing data you are permitted to retain
  • Sales, tax, and settlement reports needed for your records
  • Gift-card / loyalty liability reports and current balances
  • Photos or screenshots of routing, printers, tables, and key settings

Watch-outs

Do not assume every third-party Toast integration has a one-for-one replacement.

Do not cancel access before exporting historical records you may need later.

Gift cards and loyalty balances need a deliberate transition plan.

Existing Toast hardware should not be assumed reusable with a new platform.

Conversion-path note

Norvet’s Shift4 onboarding material reviewed in 2026 lists Toast among supported conversion sources. The exact objects and fields that can be converted still need to be confirmed for the individual merchant.
